They have been selected among pieces belonging to the Maebashi City collection, but also among artworks from Takasaki City Museum, Okawa Museum of Art, and private collection in Gunma.

Starting from the second half of the 19th century, artworks have been gradually losing their role of giving a faithful representation of the reality and modern artists started to seek for a completely new form of pictorial expression. Some of these artists, like Klee and Kandinsky, melted motifs together by striving to match the sounds of music to the world of fine arts, and found their own way of expression in mere colors. The circulation of these paintings based on colors also strongly influenced some Japanese vanguard authors representing the 20th century, such as Ei-Q and ONOSATO Toshinobu. Through this collection of artworks coming from all over the prefecture, we would like to invite everybody to this rhythmical world of colors that shows the greatest power of imagination owned by the 20th century art.

With this exhibition, we would also like to present for the first time Nomura Makoto’s music work titled “Arts Maebashi: 9 Short Pieces for Piano”, born during the event “PAINTING × MUSIC” that was part of the “Pre-event Maebashi Collection Arts Exhibition: The Start of the Journey” held in 2013. We would like to suggest to all our visitors a new way of enjoying artworks that focuses on both visual and auditory sensations, leading you to admire paintings while listening to the music resounding from your headphones.

24 January 2015 – 10 March 2015 (2015.01.24 – 2015.03.10)
Venue : Arts Maebashi
Open
