Creators of art do not necessarily have to be talented in the traditional sense of the word. Art can also be a way of life, and living one’s life creatively can also be considered art.

SHIRAKAWA Yoshio is an artist whose concept of art includes this latter definition and whose works and activities consistently have reflected this trend. Through the wide scope of his work, which includes not only artworks but also several writings, he has constantly criticised our contemporary society where the definition of art has narrowed, as well as being inspirational to the younger generation of artists.

SHIRAKAWA spent time in France and Germany in the seventies. Following his return, he based his studio in Gunma, and has continued working up until now at the foot of Mt. Akagi. However, he eventually decided to distance himself from the west and began explore possible forms of art around him in Gunma and Maebashi. he is also considered a pioneer of regionalism, a movement which began to emerge in the nineties.

During this exhibition you will be able to see much of SHIRAKAWA’s works, from his concept notes during his European stay, to his new works created specifically for this exhibition.

15 March 2014 – 15 June 2014
Venue : Arts Maebashi Open hours : 11:00-19:00 (Last admittance: 30 min. before closing)
Closed on Wednesdays

Admission : adult 600 (400) yen, university students 400 yen, Over 65 years old 400 yen.
